Teeth Whitening Trouble: What Really Works?

so, you’ve tried whitening your teeth, and if you’re like a lot of the patients we see at Northwest Dental Group you’ve experienced mixed results. A lot of our patients have come to believe that teeth whitening is just a money making scam – it isn’t, but only if you choose the right kind of whitening.

Almost all over-the-counter whitening kits are a gamble. You never quite know what you’re getting when you try the newest gadget or the best deal. In contrast, the professional teeth whitening we offer at our Rochester dentist office has been creating great results for years. If you want to get whitening you can rely on it’s essential to know what does and doesn’t work, and why.

The Best Ingredients

What kind of active ingredients do you see on commercial teeth whitening kits? If it’s anything besides hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide you aren’t getting a product that’s demonstrated to work! Peroxide whitening products have been the standard in whitening for years, and it’s for one simple reason: they work!

Hydrogen peroxide whitening gels break down into oxygen and water: it’s that breakdown that lifts stains out of your teeth and scrubs away the deep stuff that won’t come out by conventional means. Hydrogen peroxide works best at higher concentrations that you can only find in professional products like those available at Northwest Dental Group.

Carbamide peroxide works as well, and is what is found in most commercially available whitening kits. While it does work it simply doesn’t do as good a job as hydrogen peroxide because of the steps it needs to take to break down. First it turns into hydrogen peroxide and urea and then into water and oxygen. Because it takes an additional step the hydrogen peroxide isn’t present in nearly as great a concentration, leading to unreliable results.

For reliable teeth whitening you can’t beat professional strength hydrogen peroxide gels!

One Size Fits All?

Most teeth whitening systems involve gels placed in mouth trays. These systems work but only under very certain circumstances: specifically, the whitening gel needs to stay completely isolated from your mouth because saliva destroys hydrogen peroxide.

At our Rochester dentist office we use custom built whitening trays that are made from an impression of your teeth. This ensures an even and complete gel coverage and the trays are also designed to lock out saliva: something that over-the-counter whitening kits just can’t do!

Typical commercial whitening trays are designed to fit as many people as possible, and what that really means is that they don’t fit anyone! Without a tight edge that seals out saliva you’re never going to get the results you want: results tend to be splotchy, uneven, or completely undetectable!

Beware Gadgets And Alternatives

A lot of commercial whitening products offer fancy gizmos that are designed to accelerate the whitening process. Many of these devices mimic the design of the products that are used in professional whitening treatments, but just like any other commercial product they simply don’t duplicate the results that professional treatments offer.

One of the most common additions to newer over-the-counter whitening kits is an LED light that you place in your mouth to accelerate the whitening process. These lights try to replicate the ultraviolet whitening lights that are used in the in-office whitening available at Northwest Dental Group, but just like other commercial kits they simply can’t do it.

The lights we use to whiten your teeth at our Rochester dentist office are finely tuned UV lights that are designed to replicate intense sunlight. Think about they hydrogen peroxide bottle you have at home: it’s opaque because peroxide is so sensitive that sunlight can ruin it! Intense bursts of UV light can speed up the whitening process when applied correctly, taking whitening times from days to just an hour or two!

The lights in over-the-counter kits can’t match the strength, intensity, or fine-tuning that our professional whitening lights are subjected to. Selling a professional strength whitening light wouldn’t be in the best interests of commercial whitening companies: they’re intensely strong, expensive, and take a lot of power.
