Gum Disease Treatment
You can’t have healthy teeth without healthy gums! Gum disease is the most common cause of lost teeth in adults. So it’s important to treat gum disease when it’s still in its early stages.
If we detect gum disease during your dental exam at Northwest Dental Group, we’ll treat it with a deep cleaning called scaling and root planing.
Our Gum Disease Treatment
If our Rochester, MN dentists find gum disease, they’ll treat it with a two-part deep cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing.
- Scaling removes plaque and tartar from the area below your gumline
- Root planing gently smoothes the roots of your teeth, which enables your gums to more easily reattach to the teeth
For cases of gum disease that do not respond to scaling and root planing, we can refer you to a periodontist, a dentist who specializes in the treatment of gum disease.
Two Stages of Gum Disease
Gum disease is caused by a buildup of bacteria-filled plaque. There are two stages of gum disease. For the most successful outcome, we want to treat it before it has a chance to get to the second stage and endanger your teeth.
In the early stage of gum disease, called gingivitis, your gums become tender and inflamed. They may bleed when you brush your teeth.
If plaque is not removed and gum disease advances, the inner layer of your gums pull away from your teeth and create “pockets” where more bacteria can collect and cause infection. This stage is called periodontitis. The connective tissue that holds your teeth in place begins to break down.
