Do a Google search for “common phobias” and it won’t be too hard to find a list that mentions dentists. In fact, over 25 percent of people consider themselves to be scared of the dentist – that’s a lot of people! If you’re one of the quarter of people on earth who have a hard time committing to dental appointments we understand!
At Northwest Dental Group we try hard to prevent and treat dental anxiety. There’s a lot we can do to make your visit better, but we want to talk more about getting to the core of why dental care is so terrifying for so many people. You might be surprised at how much you can control about this common phobia!
The Root Of The Matter
Are you scared of the dentist? Think back to the reason why – there’s a good possibility you might not even remember what triggered your fear. For a lot of our patients it’s a bad experience in the past. For plenty of others it’s a story they’ve been told by a friend or family member, and for others still it’s a movie or TV show that depicted dentistry as terrifying.
No matter the cause of your dental fear there’s one thing for certain: it’s due to something that happened in your past. That past experience is not only causing you to react unfavorably to the idea of dental care, it’s setting you up with expectations for your future care that may be unrealistic.
One of the keys to controlling your fear of dentistry, or any other fear or anxiety for that matter, is realizing what that fear is: a past experience that’s changing the way you think about the future. You’re predicting the outcome of something before it’s happened – seems unrealistic, doesn’t it?
Dismissing Bad Thinking
There’s no way for you to know what a particular dental procedure is going to be like if you’ve never had it. And there’s definitely no way to know what you experience at our Rochester office will be like if you’re a new patient! Conquering your fear of dentistry requires you to realize that you’re giving in to bad thinking when you assume your fears are true.
A common method in conquering anxiety is to realize that you don’t know the future. That’s where most fears come from: the idea that we know what’s going to happen because we’ve had it happen in the past. While some activities can be reasonably predicted in advance dentistry definitely isn’t in that category.
We encourage each and every one of our patients to approach dental care with an open mind. It’s okay to be nervous, but know that modern dentistry is less painful, more focused on patient comfort, and not nearly as nerve-wracking as it used to be. We’re confident that you’ll be amazed at how easy dental care can be once you realize it’s not all bad!
When Fear Is Too Great
Some patients who try learning to overcome fear simply can’t. If your fears and anxieties about dentistry have made it impossible for you to get the care you need we can still help through the use of dental sedation.
We offer four different levels of sedation that are ideal for a variety of different services. From simple, easily dismissed laughing gas to higher level IV sedation, we can determine exactly what you need in order to find relief.
Depending on the kind of treatment you’re having and the level of fear you have about your dental care we can determine which method will best suit you. We want to make your dental care easy, and sedation is often the best way to do it!
