Your kids may not be thinking about it, but you are probably aware that the first day of school is getting closer and closer. The good news is that you still have plenty of time to schedule back-to-school dental cleanings for your daughters and sons.
And if you live in or near Rochester, MN, is you can call our family dentists in the morning to make an appointment that same day. Call 507-315-2932 or contact us online to request your appointment at Northwest Dental Group.
As you are checking off items on your back-to-school supply lists, we’ve put together a short checklist as well. We want your kids to show up on the first day of classes with healthy smiles.
□ Brush Your Teeth Twice A Day
To do well in school, you need the right supplies. The same is true for keeping your family’s mouths healthy. To fight cavities, you need toothpaste with fluoride and soft-bristled toothbrushes. (Look for ones with the ADA Seal of Acceptance.)
Teach your kids to brush their teeth twice a day and for two minutes each time. Everyone should scrub their teeth on all sides (but not too hard), spit out the toothpaste, and rinse their toothbrushes clean when they are finished.
Brushing helps to remove bacteria and plaque, which can lead to tooth decay, cavities, and other oral health problems.
□ Clean Between Your Teeth Every Day
As great as your toothbrush is, it isn’t the best tool for removing plaque and food particles from between your teeth and gums.
Fortunately, there are other tools you can use for this job. The most common is dental floss. All you need is a piece about 18 inches long. Wrap the ends around your fingers and use a small section to hug it around your teeth on both sides and below the gumline.
If flossing is too hard to use for any reason, you may want to consider getting flossers instead. These have short handles with a strand of floss on the one end. Many people find these more comfortable to use than dental floss.
Another option is a water flosser, which uses a stream of water to clean the spaces you may have missed with your toothbrush.
□ Get Regular Dental Cleanings
We hope to see you and your family a few times every year for professional dental cleanings and exams.
We all have bad days when maybe we don’t brush or floss as well as we should. This can give bacteria an opportunity to form plaque and start the early stages of tooth decay. By visiting Northwest Dental Group for a check-up, we can remove any plaque or tartar that may have formed on your teeth.
This also gives up a chance to spot cavities early. If we treat them early, they are much less likely to cause toothaches or other problems.
□ Get Extra Credit (Sealants, Fluoride, Mouthguards)
As part of our preventive dentistry, we also offer dental sealants and fluoride treatments. Sealants can protect your kids’ teeth against cavity-causing bacteria, and fluoride treatments can repair and strengthen the enamel of your family’s teeth.
If you have young athletes, you need to do more than protect their smiles against tooth decay. A custom-fitted athletic mouthguard, which you can get at our office, offers the best protection against dental injuries and is more comfortable to wear than bulky boil-and-bite mouthguards.
