Dr Post Talks about Dental Implants
Implants are a great option for people who are missing teeth. I always say it's a great option for missing tooth, not to replace a tooth. So we always try to keep the natural teeth as possible, but 15 years ago, I did two implants on my mom. An hour later we were eating at Olive Garden. It's amazing. There's very little pain associated with implants, and they're 97 percent successful over 20 years. They look, they function, they act just like natural teeth, but they can't get a cavity.
A dental implant procedure will give you teeth that:
- Stay in Place – Since implants are embedded in your jaw, your replacement teeth aren’t going anywhere. Even without adhesive, they won’t shift or move. Forget your fears about teeth coming loose in social situations.
- Keep Your Jaw Strong and Healthy – One of implants’ biggest benefits is that they act like natural tooth roots, keeping your jaw strong by stimulating it when you chew. Without this stimulation, your bone shrinks. This shrinkage makes your face look older.
- Let You Enjoy All Kinds of Foods – With chewing power nearly as strong as natural teeth, you can eat all your favorite foods again. No need to worry when biting into a crunchy apple!
- Require No Special Maintenance – With most kinds of implants, you’ll clean your replacement teeth the same way you did your natural teeth, with brushing and flossing.
- Can Last a Lifetime – With proper care, implants will last decades. Unlike dentures, you won’t need periodic adjustments to improve the fit.

Dr Sperling Talks about in depth about Dental Implants
Dental implants are a simulated tooth root, and it's virtually a very similar size, very similar shape to the tooth that was in the position before. So they are usually made of titanium, and they're placed into the same position where the tooth used to be.
They are considered the standard of care for certain conditions, one of those being if a person has to lose all their teeth, for example, and needs to have a lower denture made. Today, a lower denture plus two implants is considered the standard of care. So it stabilizes things. It doesn't allow the denture to slide around. It minimizes the need for adhesives. Patients just do much better with those.
The pain points or the difficulties that people have are twofold. One is the people that have most of their teeth still, and maybe they have to lose a tooth. Well, we go, and our options used to be putting a bridge in there, which is a still a fine option if that's the only choice. But those are much more difficult to clean and keep clean, and we see maintenance issues with them. Where a single implant, which is a single root stimulation and a crown on the top, just replaces what's missing. Much easier to keep clean, much stronger, even stronger than a natural tooth.
The second being, where there is a lower denture is notorious for sliding around, and putting two implants in there can make a huge quality-of-life difference for these people going forward.
We do single implants. That's probably 90 percent of what we do, the single tooth. We do full-arch where there needs to be multiple implants placed to replace an entire arch, and that can be something that's actually snapped in, or it can be something that's screwed in and the patient can't take it out.
Cosmetic is an area that's coming into its own. That's an area that where the envelope is being pushed and changed a little bit through research, and something as simple as a front tooth that gets knocked out and needs to be gone can oftentimes be replaced with an implant the same day if there's no infection there to start with.
So that from a cosmetic standpoint is extremely favorable to the patient. They want to get something back in there as soon as possible, and it's not always able to be done. I would say the majority of the time though, there is infection and so there has to be a delayed time before the implant can be restored or even placed. The healing has to occur first.
Implants are so versatile they can replace any number of teeth, depending on the kind of dental restorations used with them. At our office, your dental implants options may include:
- An Implant With a Dental Crown – A dental implant restored with a dental crown is a great replacement for a single tooth.
- Implants With a Dental Bridge – You can replace several missing teeth in a row using an implant-supported bridge. It eliminates the need for us to drill into healthy teeth surrounding the gap in your smile.
- Mini Dental Implants – With their smaller size, mini implants often work well for patients who lack enough bone density in their jaw to support conventional implants. They are often used to keep lower dentures in place.
- Implant-Supported or Implant-Retained Dentures – Dentures can be anchored to implants with ball-and-socket connectors or clipped onto a sturdy metal bar attached to implants. Either way, you won’t need adhesive to keep them in place.
- All-on-4® or All-on-6 Dental Implants – With careful placement, it’s possible to attach a complete arch of fixed replacement teeth to as few as four implants. Using fewer implants means a less invasive procedure and faster recovery. They are a great option for a full-mouth reconstruction.
